Soldier Typing 2

Japanese title: ソルジャータイピング2

Japanese Typing Sequel PC

Type a word and a soldier walks out of your castle. He keeps walking whether you watch him or not. Six waves, one boss at the end of them, and a couple of doors that are not on the map. Played with a keyboard, for PC.

Soldier Typing 2 preview

Read the guide below, or load the game when you are ready.

Best played on a PC with a keyboard. English controls and help are available; the practice text and story are Japanese - you type hiragana words using romaji (Latin letters), so it's good practice if you're learning Japanese. If you use Japanese input software, turn the IME off before you start.

Ranking

Scores from players who cleared the game. Enter a name when you start a run, or your score won't reach the board. Soldier Typing 2 keeps its own table, separate from the first game's.

I made this game, so the wave counts and the routes below come from the build itself rather than from poking at it and guessing.

The loop is the one the first game ran on. Words appear in hiragana with the romaji spelled out underneath, you type the romaji, a soldier spawns, and from there he is on his own. Chain words without a mistake and a combo multiplier stacks onto your score. Let anything reach the castle and the run ends. What changes is the reason you are typing, and it changes more than once.

Before you play: this is a keyboard game, so PC is recommended. If you have a Japanese IME installed, switch it off first.

How to Play

  • Type the romaji under the hiragana word to summon a soldier
  • Soldiers march toward the enemy and fight without further input
  • Finish words back to back to build a combo multiplier on your score
  • If enemies reduce your castle’s HP to zero, it’s game over
  • Defeat the wave 6 boss to clear the game

Not every wave wants the same thing from you. Some are won by clearing the field, and on others the timer running out is itself the win condition, so more soldiers is not always the answer. The banner at the start of a wave tells you which kind you are in. Past that, just keep your hands moving.

What's Different From the First Game

  • Six waves instead of five, with a longer boss at the end of them
  • Waves you survive rather than clear, which the first game never asked for
  • A hidden boss with its own separate score line, reachable two different ways
  • A route that only opens after a second clear, with no attack command in it at all
  • Its own ranking table, so scores never mix with the original's

Everything else is deliberately familiar. If you played the first one, your hands already know this game.

The Doors That Aren't On the Map

There are three ways past the ordinary ending. The block below is shut on purpose. It tells you how to get in and nothing about what is on the other side.

Show how to reach the hidden boss and the extra route (entry conditions only)

1. Click the background 50 times

  1. Play normally and defeat the wave 6 boss
  2. On the clear screen, take the option to start a second run
  3. During waves 1 and 2 of that second run, click the sky or the grass 50 times in total

Cracks show up partway through. Keep going to 50. Only clicks inside the game scene count, so the input panel, the settings button and the page around the game are all excluded. You can click anywhere in the scene, and you do not need to click fast. When wave 1 ends and the prompt to continue appears, press Enter to move into wave 2. Reloading the page puts the count back to zero.

2. Summon nothing

This one works on a first run. It leads to the same hidden boss, only the door is different.

  1. Enter a name, start the game, and let wave 1 run without typing a single word
  2. When the prompt to continue appears, press Enter and nothing else
  3. Sit out wave 2 the same way, all the way to the end

If a soldier slips out, restarting is more reliable than trying to recover. And do not read this as press nothing at all. The Enter between wave 1 and wave 2 is the one key you do need.

3. The broken next run

Play the second run normally and defeat the wave 6 boss again. The input panel comes apart. On the clear screen after that, an option to continue into a broken run appears, and taking it starts a different kind of route, one with no attack command anywhere in it. Follow what the screen tells you from there.

Developer's Note

This started as a byte-for-byte copy of the first game's live build. I changed the save keys and the score table so the two could not contaminate each other, then kept editing until it was not the same game any more. Sequels get talked about as though they start from a blank page. This one started from a finished one, which is a stranger place to work, because every change has to argue with something that already worked.

The part I got wrong for the longest time was wave 1. I knew what was coming later, so I kept making the opening too knowing, seeding little hints that were invisible to me and, I suspect, loud to anyone meeting the game cold. The version that shipped is the plainest wave 1 I wrote.

FAQ

Do I need to play the first Soldier Typing first?
No. Wave 1 teaches you everything you need. Playing the first game first does change how a couple of later scenes read, but nothing is locked behind it. You can play the original here.
Can I play on a phone?
It's a keyboard game, so we recommend playing on a PC.
My keystrokes aren't registering correctly.
You summon soldiers by typing romaji (Latin letters). If you use Japanese input software, turn the IME off before you start.
How do I win?
Defeat the wave 6 boss. Note that not every wave is won by clearing it. On some you only have to survive until the timer runs out. If enemies reduce your castle’s HP to zero, it’s game over.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, in your own browser. Come back on the same browser and the same page and your run count and unlocks are still there. A different browser, or a private window, starts from zero.

Play the First One

The original is still up and still free. It is shorter, and it runs on the same keystrokes, so it makes a decent warm-up.

Soldier Typing Soldier Typing Five waves, five bosses, and a turn you probably won't see coming.
