Popcorn Typing is an idle typing game where you type prompts to pop popcorn. The controls (leveling up, facilities, crossbreeding research) are covered on the game page's how-to-play section, so here I'll write about how to raise your score and how to make typing feel easier. (It's a Japanese typing game: the prompts appear in hiragana and you type them in romaji.)
Your score is decided by the "multiplier"
There's no complicated combo-scoring system here. What really moves your points is the multiplier that grows through leveling up and crossbreeding. Raise the multiplier and the same typing earns more and more.
So rather than "just type as fast as possible," you'll end up scoring higher if you grow the multiplier first and then type. Crossbreeding in particular ties directly into the multiplier, so make it your top priority if you're chasing points. Levels quietly raise your base the more you keep typing, so running them alongside crossbreeding is the right balance.
The prompts are all familiar words
Prompts range widely, from short words to full sentences. The themes are words tied to popcorn and amusement parks, everyday turns of phrase, buzzwords, and the like. Most are words you already know, so you shouldn't get stuck even on a first play. Since longer sentences are mixed in, you'll naturally build up your longer-form typing as you play.
Tips to make the typing itself lighter
Grow your multiplier while also sharpening your accuracy and you'll climb even faster. Since full sentences show up too, these three help:
- Don't look at your hands. Keeping the home position (left hand ASDF, right hand JKL;) lets you lock your eyes on the screen, which makes you faster.
- Take the shortest romaji route. Using short spellings like "shi" as "si" or "tsu" as "tu" makes long sentences much easier.
- Keep a steady rhythm. Typing at an even pace, rather than rushing and tripping up, cuts mistakes and is ultimately faster.
